What a stay here is like

The whole point is that nobody has to leave

Coffee on the deck before anyone else is up. Somebody starts breakfast in the kitchen while two people are still asleep three floors away and nobody hears a thing. By afternoon the kids are on the air hockey table downstairs, the teenagers have taken over the loft, and whoever wanted quiet has found it on the upper deck with a book.

Dinner is on the long table with the doors open. Then the hot tub, and the mountains going dark. That is a good day here, and it does not require anybody to get back in the car.

Why this one

Built for a group that actually wants to be together

Most cabins that claim to sleep ten get there with bunk beds. This one does not.

King bed in the top-floor master bedroom with exposed A-frame rafters

Two king suites, three floors apart

The master is at the top of the house. The second king is at the bottom. Two couples get real separation — not two doors on the same hallway.

Lower-level game room with an air hockey table and a shuffleboard table

Two hangouts, three floors apart

Air hockey, shuffleboard, foosball and darts on the lower level. A multicade with 65+ games, board games and a wall of books up in the loft. Nobody has to agree on one thing to do.

Bathroom vanity with a second door open through to the game room

Every bath has two doors

All three bathrooms open into a bedroom and into the common area. Whoever is on the sleeper sofa never walks through someone else's room in a towel.

Hot tub on a covered deck at Acorn Ridge surrounded by forest

Outside

Three levels of deck, and a hot tub under cover

The decks wrap the front, side and back of the house across three levels, so there is always one in the sun and one in the shade. The hot tub sits on the covered lower deck, which means it works in the rain and in January.

The middle and upper decks have rocking chairs and chaise lounges, and there are Adirondack chairs on the upper front deck facing the mountains. The middle deck has the gas grill, and a table that seats eight shares that same level. At the entry level there is an outdoor sectional around a gas fire table.

You also stand a good chance of watching a black bear cross the yard from up there. Shagbark has plenty of them, and for most families it turns out to be the story they take home. It stays that way as long as the coolers and the food come indoors when you are done — there is a bear-proof bin outside for the rest.

And a short drive down the mountain there is the community park — pool, tennis and pickleball courts, a playground, and a disc golf course along the creek.

Wide valley view toward the Smoky Mountains from Acorn Ridge

Where it is

Close enough to everything, far enough from the traffic

Acorn Ridge sits in Shagbark, a gated community off Highway 321 in the Waldens Creek area west of Pigeon Forge. The Island is twenty-two minutes from the door and Dollywood twenty-seven. Turn the other way and the quiet Wears Valley entrance to the national park is about half an hour.

That is the trade most people want: you are not sitting in Parkway traffic to get home, and you are not an hour from dinner either. The gate is staffed around the clock — Shagbark reckons it is the only community out here that can say so.

A note from the owners

We own this cabin. You are booking it from us.

Acorn Ridge is not run by a management company, and it is not listed on Airbnb or Vrbo. When you book here you are dealing with the two people who own the place, who picked out the beds, and who answer the phone when something is not right.

That is also why the price you see is the price.

We are Joe and Kathryn. We live in La Grange, Illinois, and we fell for East Tennessee on a Sevierville trip in 2019 without knowing much about it beforehand. When we decided to buy, we took it seriously: three trips, fifty-four properties. Then we walked into this one, saw the ridge and the oaks, and stopped looking.

Those oaks turned out to matter more than we knew when we named the place. They drop acorns across the drive every autumn, and acorns are exactly what brings the deer and the black bears up the hill before winter. The thing we named the cabin after is the reason you stand a good chance of watching one cross the yard.

Since we bought it we have doubled the hot water capacity, put in new kitchen cabinets and appliances, refreshed all three bathrooms, added the games and the multicade, and replaced the beds and the furniture inside and out — all of it aimed at groups who came here to be together. Joe is happiest on the decks. Kathryn is happiest on the decks too, in the hot tub, or downstairs in the game room. We hope you leave liking it as much as we do.
